A Canonical Coronation is an act given by the Pope to crown a particular Marian image. A Papal Bull, issued by the Supreme Pontiff, is a document recognizing the role of a Marian image in cultivating the growth of Christianity.
The antiquity, devotion, and miracles attributed to a Marian image are some of the requisites for the image to be recognized and canonically crowned. Crowning a Marian image symbolizes the Queenship of Mary and a Mother to the King of Kings, our Lord, Jesus Christ.
Commemorating the 17th Canonical Coronation Anniversary of Our Lady of the Abandoned
It was in the year 2005 when Pope Benedict XVI issued a Papal Bull granting the image of Our Lady of the Abandoned to crown canonically. The said Papal Bull is one of the first acts performed by Pope Benedict XVI as a Pontiff.
Since then, devotion to Nuestra Senora de los Desamparados continues to grow as it attracts pieties all over the country. This is the second Marian image canonically crowned after the Nuestra Senora de la Paz y Buenviaje in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Antipolo.
This year marks the 17th anniversary of crowning the image of Our Lady of the Abandoned. Let us look back at how this significant event changed the landscape of Marian devotion not only in Marikina City but also in other parts of the country:
History
To commemorate the canonical coronation anniversary is to become part of the unfolding history. As we journey in this world, we continue to witness the miracles attributed to the Virgin Mary, testimonies and accounts that can pass on through generations.
Cultivating the Mission
It also touches on the importance of why we venerate the Virgin Mary- through our devotion, we also help her in her mission to spread the goodness of the Lord.
As we commemorate the 17th canonical anniversary, let us pray to our Virgin Mary to prosper us with her guidance, that we may continue to be the missionaries of the Good News, a history of countless blessings and miracles. Let us pray that we may continue to pass on the stories attributed to the miraculous lady who will never abandon us.
