Today is the Solemnity of Christ the King and the last Sunday in the liturgical calendar before Advent. In the Gospel, we read a scene from the Crucifixion of the Lord. Why is this? When we think of kingship, we typically think of different grandiosities – crown, wealth, power, and title.
This does not seem to be the point of Christ’s kingship. The Gospel tells us that He is the King of Love and wants to be the King of our hearts. He may own the world and the universe, but He only wants to own our hearts. He hopes and waits for this even as He knows that our hearts are inclined to sin.
Even if He was God and King who is all-powerful, He chose to bear all the hardships of all people at all times so that our sufferings may be sanctified. God did this through the Cross – the proof of the Divine King’s great love for us. Our sufferings are now not worthless. They are holy when we go through them with God.
They have a purpose: to make us stronger in faith and purify us so that we can be more worthy to enter the Kingdom of God, Heaven. In this great solemnity, may we remember to surrender our lives, hearts, beings, and plans to God, our True King. Many other things or people may occupy our lives, but without God, those are empty.
May we, by God’s grace and mercy, make Christ the True King of our lives where He is always honored, glorified, and obeyed. In Him, we will lack nothing.
Amen. +
