We are now on the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time. The readings for today are fitting for the season. Ordinary Time is a great season for us to continue what Jesus has taught us in public ministry: to teach, preach, and cure.
In today's reading, the central focus is on the preaching: "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." Following Jesus means making greater sacrifices to repent and acknowledge our sins and frailties. Following Jesus means carrying the cross. How much can you endure to carry your own cross just to follow Him? Are you willing to leave everything to follow his lead?
Like fishers of men who are called to follow Him, they leave everything. They have faith in Jesus and His divine works. Likewise, we are also called to be the fishers of men—to continue His public ministry.
Today, we are reminded once again that during this season of Ordinary Time, how much can we endure to carry our very own cross? How far are we willing to go to leave everything? Are we ready to heed the call of Jesus to serve?
We are called to serve and encouraged to carry our own crosses as signs of repentance.
Amen.
