Have you ever been afraid?
I guess, in one way or another, you had been afraid of something. It can be about the fear of being rejected, fear of being alone and lonely, fear of losing someone, or some other things.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus repeatedly said the words: “Do not be afraid.” He asks the disciples, and us too, to be courageous witnesses of the Gospel. Jesus knew that we would be rejected and ridiculed because of our faith, just like what happened to Him and to the apostles. We will face trials, difficulties and persecutions because of our obedience to Christ. But He consoles us and assures us that God will not abandon us in fulfilling this mission. He will send us the Holy Spirit to guide and strengthen us along the way.
In our First Reading, we read that Prophet Jeremiah also experienced persecution because of his obedience to God’s will. He heard the whisperings of many: “Terror on every side!
Denounce! let us denounce him!” Even his friends left him and wished that bad things would happen to him. But he persevered on his mission because he believed that God was with him. And so Prophet Jeremiah praised God all the more.
May we find inspiration on the life of Prophet Jeremiah and in Jesus’ consoling words. May we become courageous witnesses of the Gospel by our loving words and actions to our neighbor. As Jesus had said: “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:35).
